Toshiba Working upon New Smartphones

2009-03-09 00:00:00
We have learned that from Global Certification Forum (GCF). What we are speaking about now is not a single mobile device but two of them. GCF has got approval for two Toshiba smartphones. TG01 is one of them, other being named in the documents as “To Be Advised”. The specifications (not full) of the two mobile phones coincide. Both are quad-band GSM mobile phones (850/900/1800/1900 MHz) supporting HSDPA and MMS. Well, maybe the difference hides in the operating system they run.

Toshiba weighs in on Samsung/SanDisk battle

2008-10-20 00:00:00
The ongoing wrangle in the flash memory business that could potentially see Samsung buy out SanDisk took a new turn at the weekend when it emerged that Toshiba is getting involved too. Japanese media reports say that Toshiba is talking to US-owned SanDisk about buying ¥100 billion (£570 million) worth of SanDisk equipment in a factory they already run together as a joint venture. Protective measure The possible move is being seen as Toshiba's attempt to protect its production capabilities should the Samsung takeover of SanDisk eventually go ahead. If that were to happen there would be little chance of Samsung wishing to work with Toshiba in future. Money is tight Samsung currently has 42 per cent of the world's NAND flash memory market, with Toshiba in second place on 28 per cent. As Toshiba currently has less than ¥300 billion in the bank, the possibility of spending more than a third of that underlines how seriously it takes the Samsung threat.

Toshiba powers cell phone with methanol fuel cell -- no, you can t have one

2008-10-02 00:00:00
Toshiba continues to tease us with its prototype liquid fuel cell-powered gadgets: last year it was a Gigabeat media player, and at this year's CEATEC you can check out a direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) that's been crammed inside a cell phone, lending it a robust six hours of talk time (compared to the paltry three or four hours of a traditional battery). Toshiba won't reveal the capacity of the DMFC, but they have said that a 50ml cartridge is good for about 15 refills. No release date yet, but the phone "might" be available "as early as next year." In the meantime, enjoy this picture of a woman holding a flip phone with "DMFC" clearly visible on the display.
